For memories that linger
At Blackdown Charcoal, we believe a memorable barbecue is about more than great food; it’s about shared moments. From our home on the Devon and Somerset border, we sustainably craft a cleaner, chemical-free British lumpwood charcoal. It’s made with patience for intimate moments and social feasts, deep conversations, and stories that stay with you long after the embers fade.

True British Lumpwood Charcoal: The Gold Standard
The "bargain" bag of charcoal from the supermarket has likely traveled thousands of miles from the Philippines, South Africa or Paraguay. We think that’s bonkers. And then there are briquettes, made with all sorts of things you don't want drifting into your food.
British Charcoal makers, like us, are here to change that.
Charcoal Matters
Choosing the right fuel is about more than just heat; it’s about heritage and health. Mass-produced charcoal and briquettes are often the product of illegal deforestation in tropical rainforests. These imports are processed in inefficient kilns that pump pollutants into the atmosphere and leave you with a low-carbon product that’s a headache to light. We believe your family barbecue shouldn't come at the cost of the planet.
Better for you, better for the planet
We honour the craft of traditional British colliers. By using wood sourced exclusively from managed British woodlands and firing it in small batches, we create charcoal with an incredibly high carbon content.
-
Chemical-Free: No nasty additives or industrial binders.
-
Hand-Packed: We sell by volume and pack every bag by hand to ensure you get high-quality lumps rather than a bag full of dust (and we even make bespoke batches on request e.g. giant lumps or single species charcoal.)
-
Efficient: Using the traditional process of pyrolysis, we use a modern "retort" method, giving a much higher wood-to-charcoal output
-
Eco-Friendly: Our process supports local woodland management rather than destroying rainforests, and reduces emissions by 75-90% compared to other methods!
A Superior Cooking Experience
Because our charcoal is purer, it behaves differently:
-
Instant Start: It’s naturally easy to light—forget the chemical firelighters.
-
Rapid Heat: Be ready to cook in minutes, not half an hour.
-
Better Flavor: Experience the clean, authentic taste of British hardwoods.
-
Lighter Weight: High carbon means it’s feather-light but packs a serious punch.
Better for your barbecue, better for the planet.
