About Us

Wood Colliers of the Blackdowns
A short story of a family who loved the trees (us!). A Mum, a Dad, and two little explorers—one with a wild heart and big questions, and one born to climb. Passed down through generations of woodland souls and leaf-readers, a fire burned in our hearts and we couldn't resist the call of the forest.

While other charcoal travels over deep blue oceans and wide, dusty deserts, ours stays right here at home. We don’t cut the forest down; we help it wake up! Using the magical, ancient rhythm of coppicing, we thin the trees with care. This lets the golden sun reach the ground, so new bluebells can bloom and the trees can grow tall and strong again. In our woods, we aren’t just makers; we are Custodians.

We gather wood by hand and turn it into "Black Gold" using a Dartmoor Dragon charcoal retort. It's a balance of science and art, fire and patience. No additives go into our charcoal, and no smelly chemicals come out - just the honest heart of the British forest.

Every bag of charcoal we make is a promise from our family to yours: a promise to keep the woods singing, the squirrels scurrying, and your fire glowing bright.

From our hills to your home,
The Gregory Family
